Silence often lingers in the fragile space in the wake of a pivotal event. Aftermath, explores this silence—the echoes of what was said, what was felt, and what was left unresolved. In that silence lives questions without answers, words left unsaid, and feelings that refuse to be quieted. 

	The piece opens in shadow, where uncertainty and grief move slowly, almost hesitantly. From this darkness emerges a burst of intensity—passionate, radiant, even defiant—a reminder of what it feels like to have hope and possibility. But just as suddenly, the light recedes into ambiguity. The music retreats, not with resolution, but with a kind of quiet resignation, as if the answers are just out of reach.

	At its core, Aftermath is less about a single story than about the universality of aftermath itself. It speaks to the lingering ache after loss, the bittersweetness of parting, the hollow stillness after joy, and the fragile persistence of memory. It is the sound of carrying something unfinished, of holding onto an echo that refuses to disappear.

Written as part of a collaboration between Dr. Corey Hamm's Piano Studio, Jose Franch Ballester's Clarinet Studio, and the UBC Composition Department, this exhilarating piece was originally written for Valerie Kim (Clarinet) and Jane Wang (Piano). The piece allows the clarinetist to show off fast virtuosic runs, a soaring melody, tender expression, and ultimately a blaring altissimo C, while the pianist gets equal billing with Romantic expression, crazy fast hammering of the keys, and dramatic diva moments. 
 
Fantasia for Clarinet and Piano explores various characters and moods, from adventurous, tragic, bittersweet, nostalgic, and flashy. The music makes use of familiar harmonies, but in a non-traditional way, with unexpected turns and modulations. Similarly, meter creates fun syncopations and grooves throughout the active sections. The piece was written to be genuinely exciting and satisfying for the performers as well as the audience, making use of the clarinet's full range, an extremely wide dynamic range from niente to fff, and the piano's two hands two their fullest potential.

A romantic sense of longing is imbued in this nocturne-like piece. The viola and piano's beautiful dialogue fills the hall with hope, longing, and love.
