This playful, light-hearted work for flute (or violin) and piano was written for my wife, Yumi. It is in 3 movements: The first is fast and playful. The second is like a Japanese folk song. The last is delicate and free.

These 5 short pieces were originally composed many years ago - some of my first attempts at composition.  I revisited the pieces years later and made several updates to the scores - felt almost like having a conversation with my younger self.  I attempted to retain the innocence of the original works while improving some of the compositional shortcomings.

Piano Solo

The 4 movement Piano Trio is scored for Violin, Cello and Piano.  The first movement Shanty evokes the
  drama of the sea as well as the playfulness of sailors telling stories to
  each other.  The second movement
  Ritual begins meditatively before progressing into a much more violent and
  aggressive middle section.  The
  penultimate movement Hymn is lyrical throughout and offers a reprieve from
  the more active surrounding movements. 
  The final movement Dance is rhythmical with greater dissonances than
  the prior movements  though it ends in a blaze of C major.

"Three William Blake Songs for Soprano and Piano, Opus 2" was my first attempt at composing classical songs for voice and piano.  These simple songs are to be sung with minimal vibrato and ask for a pure, clean tone.

Three Langston Hughes Songs for Soprano and Piano Opus 12 were inspired
  by the wonderful rhythmical poetry of Langston Hughes (1902-1967). These
  songs have a strong jazz influence and portray feelings of raw unfiltered
  passion. They call for a theatrical performance.

These 3 energetic preludes were inspired by and dedicated to pianist Talman Welle.  I hope Talman's power and energy shine through in these three preludes.

Three Preludes for Solo Piano

In an unusual twist, Carr composed the musical component of Nine Bethany
  Swann Songs prior to the texts 
    
    having been written. The poet, Bethany Swann, listened to his music and
  through that experience was able to 
    
    create the lyrics that so perfectly flow in the songs  an impressive
  achievement. The nine-movement song 
    
    cycle begins with In Memoriam, the most pop music sounding of the songs,
  with a simple lyrical line. Roses 
    
    Through Barbed Wire follows  it is more aggressive and percussive with an
  active accompaniment to the voice. 
    
    The third piece of the cycle, The Somnambulist, is in two parts: the first
  with long melodic lines over a minimalist 
    
    accompaniment; the second, more chordal and lyrically active. The Struggle
  shows influences of Americana 
    
    and has a purely instrumental middle section. The midway point of the
  cycle, Stained Glass, makes use of glowing 
    
    chords in various modes. The sixth song is A Return, which contains thick
  textures and chordal accompaniment 
    
    in support of the vocal part. Song of Returns introduces a slower pace and
  is imagined as an impressionistic 
    
    cowboy song  if such a thing were to exist! The penultimate movement,
  Light Sources is a multi-part song 
    
    having an ethereal middle section and an explosive instrumental ending. The
  cycle concludes with Northern 
    
    Boundaries, which includes a hymn-inspired section at the end.

This is an atmospheric and impressionistic piece for flute (or violin) and piano. There is a darker middle section contrasting the brighter beginning and end. The difficulty level is intermediate.

Twelve Variations based on the National Anthem of Lesotho. The composer lived in Lesotho from 1995-1997 as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Each variation is based on a scene from Lesothosome are everyday activities such as plowing fields or looking out over the mountains. The earlier variations are more light-hearted than the later variations which grow in intensity. The variations are: (1) Mountains; (2) Old Man Looking at Mountains; (3) Herdboy Playing Pipe In Field; (4) Plowing Field as Storm Approaches; (5) Children Chasing Chicken; (6) Drunken Men Fighting At Bar; (7) Witchdoctor; (8) Chief Struggles With New World; (9) Sun Hardens Ground: Drought; (10) War; (11) AIDS; (12) Mountains Remain.

Lesotho Variations

A collection of short and (for the most part) playful preludes for piano. The composer thought of these as a lively 'appetizer' to begin a concert.

Five Preludes for Solo Piano

"Three Sara Teasdale Songs for Soprano and Piano" Opus 15 initially started as two songs but felt incomplete. An early 20th century American lyric poet and first winner of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1917, Teasdale often wrote poetry of intense and powerful sadness. The second song of this set "I Shall Not Care" was rumored to be her suicide note (she took her own life in 1933) though the poem was actually published several years earlier. Teasdale's poetry however can also depict hope and a desire for love. So The thrid song "White Fog," displays an awe of nature as well as self-confidence to make the set more fully representative of Teasdale's character and depth as a poet.

"Aki - Vocalise for Soprano and Piano"  Opus 4 was given its name by my wife Yumi. It means autumn in Japanese. She heard in the piece feelings of loneliness and also nostalgia for autumn in Japan, an appropriate description of what I wanted to express in the work. The fragile vocalise, a wordless melody, has two main themes: a simple plaintive melody depicting solitude and a second melody which is more ominous in nature.

This piano piece was inspired by the machines which surround us - and which people use - on a daily basis.  The piano is transformed into a machine to capture this imagery.

These 3 pieces depict different shades of black, white and grey: from the black and white of the piano keys – to the grey of a dark and rainy night in the Pacific Northwest — witnessed while glancing out the window which is next to the piano.
