The Melody line can be covered by a singer, but also included are parts for a Bb instrumental solo or a bass clef solo. The tune is an old one, but the lyrics were new. Fred E. Weatherly adapted the lyrics from a poem he had previously written to line up with the melody of Londonderry Air. Published in 1913, the song became a huge success. The original publication for piano and voice stated on the cover, “THIS SONG MAY BE SUNG IN PUBLIC WITHOUT FEE OR LICENSE.” Through the years many versions, arrangements and adaptations have occurred. Many singers have included the song in their repertoire including Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Sinead O’Connor, Mario Lanza, Jacqueline Marie ""Jackie"" Evancho and more.
This instrumental version for wind ensemble stays faithful to the original piano version.
