Cloudshift is a continuous movement of cloud experiences depicted in a 9
  minute musical work for string quartet by American composer, Denise (Dede)
  Ondishko. This work was commissioned by the Cleveland CityMusic Program
  for
    
    their spring concert in 2021. The sequence of clouds include:
    
    
    
    -Angel Clouds - gracing the morning moon, with moments of Cloudless Blue
  Sky
    
    -Storm Clouds -appearing out of nowhere and then, yes, Rain!
    
    -Long, Rippling Sandbar Clouds - vibrating in the highest layers of the
  sky
    
    -Cotton Candy Clouds - captivating our gaze.
    
    
    
    This meditative work is inspired by photo images of clouds drifting and
  forming over Lake Michigan captured by Susan Britton in 2020. Clouds are
  mysterious and continually re-shaping, a source of wonder and inspiration
  across all ages. When gazing at clouds, one has the feeling that they are
  gazing at the play of life in the sky; the sensation of uplift is undeniably
  strong and real. In this work, Ondishko hopes the listener gets caught up in
  the pleasing, artistic play of life in clouds!

<p>Rewarding and challenging viola solo requires technical and expressive abilities to live up to its subtitle: A lotus grows in the mud but is not muddy. Awarded 2019 Prize for Northern California Viola Society Composition Contest. The solo begins "in the mud" with double-stop trills and transforms into an expressive melody. Duration 3.5 minutes.</p>

<p>Botticellian Trees for Alto Saxophone and Digital Audio was commissioned by Kyle Horch. The poem by William Carlos Williams was selected because of its colorful depiction of nature and the word sonorities. The composer, Denise (Dede) Ondishko, recites the poem in the first half of the work. Following this, the saxophone takes the lead in expressing the ideas of the poem. The digital-audio track was created by the composer. It accompanies the alto saxophone in the role of an evolving tapestry using a standard blues progression. This sample recording is an excerpt performed by Kyle Horch, London Royal College of Music.</p>

<p>In this 4-minute arrangement of America the Beautiful, each group of beginning string players is featured on the melody, accompanied by the more experienced members of the orchestra. Originally written by Samuel A. Ward in 1882, thisa arrangement was written for the first year strings at the Palm Springs High School in Palm Springs, California. The majesty of the third verse is sure to convey pride in our American education system and gratitude for those whose continuous efforts make it work. In the premiere version of this work, the Alma Mater was included as a partner song to the third verse. This option is available to other schools and organizations by contacting the composer. Level 1 Beginning Strings, Level 3 Orchestra. Written for string orchestra with optional winds, brass and percussion.</p>

E. E. Cummings' Christmas poem, Little Tree,' expresses the tender sensibilities and compassion of a young child toward a small tree and the ornaments that 'dream of being taken out' for the holiday. In Denise Ondishko's a cappella treatment of the poem, an undulating, repeating refrain makes this work more a lullaby than a Carol. Ondishko uses familiar modes, or scales, (Aeolian and Mixolydian) found in old Christmas carols to build a seasonal tapestry. The subtleties, innocence and joy of the text are enhanced by Ondishko's open fifths, suspensions, metric modulations, and modal transformation. This work will transport your audience to a place of loving beauty.

<p>This heartwarming poem by Edgar Guest is set in a traditional Christmas Carol format by Dede Ondishko, with three verses, a chorus, and an instrumental verse with a duration of 4 1/2 minutes. Each vocal part is featured in turn, creating a balanced and spiraling accumulation of joy and hopefulness for the holiday season. Ondishkos soaring instrumental accompaniment is sure to lift everyone's spirits! Alternate instruments parts are available for flute and clarinet. At Christmas

A Beetle's Journey is an Intermediate level work, under 4 minutes. It is
  inspired by a what-if prompt: What if the flute represented a character other
  than a bird? Thus, A Beetle's Journey for flute solo, traces the happy
  travels of this ancient,
    
    original pollinator on a flowering bush; swirling, changing directions,
  tangling and jumping
    
    halphazardly from one place to another, leaving a delicate trail of debree
  in its wake. (The beetle is
    
    known as a "dirty pollinator" for this reason!)
    
    
    
    The journey begins with a climb up to the top of a vine for a tasty bite
  (or two), and continuing to
    
    eat along its way back down. Sometimes it must hide from a predator, before
  moving unpredictably
    
    toward more nourishment. At last, this ancient insect finds rests in the
  heart of a flower blossom,
    
    warmly snuggling deep into its center; gathering pollen before it starts
  its climb again on another
    
    vine. Oh, beetle, aren't you tired?! Like the beetle, this flute solo
  requires the instrument and its
    
    player to be persistent, robust, agile, and velvety soft in all the ways
  necessary to thrive.

  subsequently arranged for cello and piano. 
  Here, Denise Ondishko has arranged the work for alto saxophone and
  piano. It is hauntingly beautiful and fits in the hands of both players
  nicely. Under 8 minutes.

Ciribiribin Trio for Clarinet, Horn and Piano  is a delightful, short instrumental work;
  sure to make you smile!  It was written
  in 1898 by Alberto Pestalozza (1851-1934), with words by Carlos Tiochet.  Here this Italian favorite is arranged for
  Trio (Clarinet, Horn and Piano in multiple combinations) in a conversational
  manner sure to encourage musical interaction and  mimicry between the players. Duration: 2
  minutes.

Ciribiribin is a delightful, short instrumental work; sure to make you smile!  It was written in 1898 by Alberto Pestalozza (1851-1934), with words by Carlos Tiochet.  Here this Italian favorite is arranged for Piano and Strings (two violins, cello with an alternate viola part).  This is sure to have everyone tapping their feet!

Water Music, The Voice of the Rain, by Denise (Dede) Ondishko, is an 8
  1/2-minute work for alto saxophone and digital audio, originally commissioned
  by London saxophonist, Kyle Horch in 2003 as part of a suite for sax and
  tape. The poem, The Voice of the Rain, by Walt Whitman is recited by the
  composer and is digitally processed and treated in a musical manner. Its
  declaration of the mystical, lavish, and nourishing properties of rain
  defines the overall shape of the work. The saxophone takes the lead in
  expressing the unseen fluidity of earthAAAs water cycle through expansive use
  of full registration, inflection, modality and tone. In this work the music
  is not interpreting the poetry but rather the poem seems to be interpreting,
  or translating, the music. The recording sample is performed by Kyle Horch.

"Search the Darkness" for viola solo, is a poetic outlook on the COVID-19 Pandemic. This three-minute work was created for an online workshop sponsored by Del Sol Quartet in SF, CA. The work begins with murky, low guttural tones and follows the urgent poem by Rumi of the same title. It gains strength as the sanguine message becomes more certain, and goes on to invoke new textures and sonorities as the struggle continues. An overly-friendly recurring refrain, defined by the musically encoded name C-O-V-I-D-1-9, interrupts the development of the theme. The work may be performed with our without a recitation of the words. This sample performance is by Adam Birnbaum in La Jolla, CA.

<p>Cogitatio begins with the delicate falling of rose petals, among an entanglement of growing vines and the prick of thorns. It blossoms into a swirling rose pattern which the composer created by tracing rose swirls across the strings, changing directions from one swirl to the next, all with the velvety softness that the viola produces so beautifully. This work is the second in a series with Out of Mud, also for Viola Solo. Both works won the Northern California Viola Society Composition Contest for new works in 2019 and 2020, respectively. This recording is performed by the 2020 winner Pearl de la Motte.</p>
