Ferdinand Ries is most often remembered today for his published reminiscences of his friend and teacher, Beethoven, co-authored with Franz Wegeler. But he was best known during his lifetime as a consummate pianist and the composer of an impressive catalog of works: 2 oratorios, 3 operas, 8 symphonies, 8 piano concertos, a violin concerto, 26 string quartets and numerous other chamber works. His style is reminiscent of his teacher, and contains elements of the Classical and early Romantic eras.
Der Morgen, Op. 27, was premiered in Godesberg, a suburb of Bonn, in 1806, and was first published by N. Simrock (Bonn) in 1811. The work's popularity is attested by the number of editions published over several decades, including an edition produced by Lowell Mason, with a new English replacement text by Rev. John S. Dwight (best remembered as the author of "O Holy Night"), published in Boston in 1845, and a second Boston edition (G. P. Reed Co.,1852) which attributes the original poem to Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten (1758-1818), a German poet who supplied texts for several of Schubert's songs, among others. That attribution has not been verified as of publication.
This edition, the first to be published in over 150 years, is based upon the following materials: 1. the composer's full-score manuscript, Staatsbibilotech Berlin; 2. the piano/vocal score, N. Simrock (Bonn) 1811; 3. the published orchestral parts, N. Simrock (Bonn) 1811; 4. the piano/vocal score, A. B. Kidder (Boston) 1845.
