This piece is a custom arrangement of Josquin des Prez’s Fantasia No. 1, beautifully adapted for a trio of three violins. Originally written for a consort of three viols, this edition brings the rich texture of early Renaissance instrumental music to modern violinists. Educational Context & Quick Facts The Composer: Josquin des Prez (c. 1450–1521) was one of the most famous, influential, and prolific composers of the Renaissance era. He was a master of the Franco-Flemish school of polyphony. Historical Significance: Often referred to simply as "Josquin," he was so highly regarded during his lifetime that music publishers rushed to put his name on manuscripts to increase sales. Martin Luther famously said of him, "He is the master of the notes. They must do as he wills; as for the other masters, they must do as the notes will."
