The father of a dear friend and fellow musician penned these short phrases as a poem in admiration and awe of the sea as he sat on a bench on a pier. He graciously granted permission to set this text and worked with the composer to produce a literal English translation that had the same words in the same spot in the sentence with the same syllabic stress in both languages. Originally an art song, this work was later converted into a choral piece. The challenging piano part combines with the choral sonorities to capture the ebb and flow, the mystery and the majesty, and the power of the ocean as it breaks against the shore. As in the art song version, the choral setting has both languages in the score and can be sung effectively in either German or English.
