During the Middle Ages, Dithmarschen was a peasant republic in the Holy Roman Empire; but in the present, it's a part of Schleswig-Holstein. The peasantry of the land had far more freedoms than the average person from the 15th century up until 1559 when Johan Rantzau succesfully invaded. Before that, Dithmarschen had fended off numerous attempts by other noblemen to subjugate them, but they had all failed. This piece is meant to invoke a vaguely medieval feeling mixed with a sense of tragedy brought forth from the peasant's subjgation.
