Horace Silver's iconic blues received the big-band treatment courtesy of arranger Ernie Wilkins for Dizzy Gillespie's big band in 1956. By and large, the arrangement remains fairly close to Silver's original intentions, especially with the melodic statements. The style is medium, down-home swing that begins with the full ensemble and then goes right into a trumpet solo. The Gillespie band played this with a lot of humor, so liberties can be taken with fun, interpretive quotes of the melody, including the baritone sax lick leading into the phrases. What a great chart to hear and play!
