These reimagined Hanukkah songs invite you and your duet partner to celebrate the musical traditions of the holiday with a jazzy twist!
My Dear Musician, The piano is often a solitary instrument—but it doesn’t have to be. As a teacher, I’ve experienced firsthand how powerful it is when two people share the bench: listening deeply, adjusting in real time, and being present in the experience together. In a world where so much of our lives happen through screens, these moments of real, human connection matter more now more than ever. It is my hope that these reimagined Hanukkah songs offer a fresh way to experience the musical traditions of the holiday while inviting you and your partner to explore a new sound. I’m truly grateful this music has found you, and I thank you and your partner for the care and effort you’ll bring to learning these songs. Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights, after all—and I can’t think of a better way to share our light with the world than by making music side by side!
My Fellow Teacher, This is your chance to model what it means to truly love the piano, embracing both the joy and challenge of continuing to grow throughout your musical life. This music isn’t meant to be sight-readable—It’s authentically jazz, which will require some amount of practice and patience on your part. I hope you’ll embrace this as a feature, not a bug. Modeling for your student what it looks like to work hard and never stop learning is one of the most powerful lessons you can give. If teaching improvisation is new to you, that’s okay. You don’t need to have all the answers. What matters is that you and your student embrace the process together. Improvisation is a vital part of musicianship, and this is an opportunity to bring it to life in a meaningful, hands-on way.
