In addition to major works for his own instrument, Tuthill composed a large catalog of music for orchestra, chorus, band, and various chamber music combinations. He enjoyed writing music for his friends and family, as well as supplying useful repertoire for instruments that other composers neglected or ignored. Tuthill grouped five works composed in 1974 as his Opus 64. The last of the set is the Duo for Oboe and Horn, a short work only thirty-two measures in length. Tuthill wrote a large amount of Gebrauchsmusik, literally "Music for Use," sometimes thought of as "House Music," to be played by friends or family. The holograph bears the title "Duo for Carol and Bill," who were evidently friends of the composer.
