Effigy II. The New Colossus

Effigy features a flute soloist who reads Emma Lazarus’s poem (“Give me your tired, your weary, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”) a la Lincoln Portrait over a hymn tune interweaving melodic fragments from the Star Spangled Banner, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and La Marseillaise. In Effigy, the band creates the sounds of New York Harbor: the wind, the surf, seagulls, and ships, as the narrator conjures the image of Lady Liberty, welcoming the next Americans to our shores. Effigy was featured at the 54th Annual National Flute Association Convention in Portland, Oregon, in the evening gala performance "The Flute and the United States."
