This piece variates a playful Eb-mixolydian theme in three ways, with one movement for each. The first movement is a simple and carefree arpeggiation of the thematic notes, ending in a loud and dissonant clutter which abruptly resolves back to Eb major -- this should sound as silly as possible. The second movement is a slow waltz which becomes a parody of itself in the latter half by diminishing the major harmonies. The tuba cadenza near the end of this movement should be interpreted ad lib, with elements removed, added, or edited as needed in order to achieve the greatest affect of humor and spunk. That affect should be carried into the third movement, which is a brisk, syncopated variation that may challenge the players' ensemble cohesion. The final unaccompanied passages in the tuba are to be extremely declarative while maintaining a sense of eccentricity or silliness.

Chapters is a continuous monologue for bass tuba. The main theme is a slow, arpeggiated line ascending through the most lyrical range of the instrument; in between theme statements are quasi-polyphonic lines which use the full range of the tuba to create the illusion of bass, harmony, and melody. The singsong nature of the theme invites rubato interpretation, and expressive annotations throughout the score encourage this further. A majestic theme appears briefly towards the end of the work, which the player should clearly convey as a brilliant and triumphal outcry. The final statement is a long series of delicate, uninterrupted arpeggios which decrescendo, and is best circular-breathed. 
This piece demands a high technical level and is for the advanced player seeking to expand their musicality.

Story for Tuba and Marimba is a short exposition on a simple motif, combining the marimba's world of attack and rhythm with the tuba's world of flow and lyricism. This means that the marimbist is challenged to think in terms of smoothness and continuity while the tubist is challenged to think in terms of beat and precision. When played correctly, this piece should cover a broad range of characters from violently decisive to mournfully sweet. However, its high rhythmic complexity poses the risk that the performers get caught up in technicalities and fail to express any character meaningfully. Therefore it is best suited for collegiate or professional musicians seeking to hone their musicality and transcend technical details.
