A Sea Trilogy, for Baritone and Piano

Baritone Solo Collection

Written for pre-college performers. 
  The earth theme pictures the elements of sun, wind, rain and earth, in
  which birds, animals and people dance and move. Scored for flute, Bb
  clarinet, violin, cello and piano. Each piece is a solo or duet, and the
  final piece brings together all the instruments. Composer of the Year Award
  from Oregon Music Teachers' Association.

Seven Dances of Earth

Flexible Instrumentation Ensemble Collection

A lyrical three movement work of fifteen minutes, which was inspired by
  visits to the McKenzie River in Oregon. This piece has received five
  performances in Oregon and Utah. Performers have been Orpheus Winds of
  Brigham Young University, and principle woodwinds of the Utah Symphony. The
  movements are, I. Flowing, II. Reflection, and III. Sparkling (Live audio is
  included here.)

I. Hide Not Thyself from Me
    
    Psalm 55 is a plea for help in a time of trouble and anguish.
    
    We implore the Lord to answer our prayers and reveal His loving care.
    
    Fear and the horrors of death are very real. We may wish to flee far away
  from the trouble. But as we call upon God, we receive the assurance
    
    that He will not only hear us, but redeem us from our stress.
    
    II. My Soul is Quiet
    
    Psalm 131 provides a calming influence upon those who suffer, or are in
  distress. As we seek the Lord in humble prayer, our souls can become calm and
  quiet, like a child at peace in his motheris arms.
    
    III. I Will Sing unto the Lord
    
    Psalm 104 provides a respite from the cares of this world.
    
    Music is eternal and pleasing unto the Lord.
    
    He made the earth, which is full of His riches. His glory endures forever.
  May this music lift hearts and bring a measure of joy to those who listen.

  Kabalevsky sonatina with interesting harmonies. Fits well under the hand.

Piano Solo

<p>Commissioned by NEXT Ensemble and Salty Cricket in 2020. The first movement is entitled "Unfolding," a reference to the great work we can accomplish as human beings when we communicate musically. Movement Two (live recording here) is entitled "Elegy." It is based on a poem by Emily Dickinson on the death of a child. There are programmatic elements, such as the slow breathing, the bells tolling and the angels wings. Here is the quote: "She died this was the way she died. And when her breath was done Took up her simple wardrobe And started for the sun Her little figure at the gate The angels must have spied, Since I could never find her Upon the mortal side." The last movement is entitled "Rejoicing," providing a respite from grief, and hope for the future.</p>

Piano Quartet No. 1

Written during the pandemic, Psalm 131 provides a calming influence upon
  those who suffer, or are in distress. As we seek the Lord in humble prayer,
  our souls can become calm and quiet, like a child at peace in his mother's
  arms. This is the choir version of my soprano solo.

1. "Fanfare," marked "boldly" recalls old Hollywood
  blockbusters.
    
    2. "Tranquility," in complete contrast, is a gentle modally based
  pastorale.
    
    3. "Into the Center" is a rhythmically varied palindrome which
  leads the listener into a gravitational center, then exits in reverse. 
    
    4. "A Dream" is based on a repetitive four note chromatic motive,
  leading to a rather wakeful climax, then back to the dreamlike state.
    
    5. "Toccata" (recorded here) takes a wild ride into many
  tonalities before ending where it began--in C.
