10 Chorales for the Developing Band features nine arrangements of classic hymns as well as one original chorale. When looking at the score, you may notice that the pages look barren. No need to worry. I intentionally left off dynamics and phrase markings to allow opportunities for you and your ensemble to make musical decisions together. When rehearsing each chorale, I recommend encouraging your students to write in any dynamics, articulations, or phrasing decided by the group to instill good pencil habits within your students. The markings in the first chorale serve as an example to follow for creating your own unique spin on the others. Additionally, the tempo markings are merely a suggestion, and I encourage you to experiment with pushing and pulling the tempo to enhance the effectiveness of your performance. By following these recommendations, this collection of chorales will make an excellent addition to your ensemble warm-up routine by developing their tone, balance, intonation, and musicianship.

This classical style piece is great for solo and ensemble festivals.  It opens with a slow and dark introduction,
  but changes to a more lively tone for the rest of the piece.  With fugue-like writing, all parts are
  interesting and enjoyable to play.

Trumpet Quintet in B-flat Major

This arrangement of "How Great Thou Art" captures the emotions that Carl Boberg felt when he experienced the harsh thunderstorm and the beautiful sights that followed.  Rich harmonic and timbral textures are used to lead the listener through a heartfelt journey where they will "see the stars" and "hear the rolling thunder" of the beautiful world around them.  Much of this piece is written in the style of a wind chorale with minimal percussion, but it concludes with cymbal crashes and timpani rolls to make a grand final impact.

How Great Thou Art

Circus Waltz is a musical interpretation of the excitement and craziness
  that is involved in the circus. The show begins with a bombastic,
  attention-grabbing
    
    opening, that sets the stage for what;s to come. Throughout the show, the
  performances of clowns, trapeze artists, and exotic animals will dazzle the
  audience. The familiar sound effects of Ta-dah and Womp Womp Womp Wah will
  also be heard. The show will conclude with a grand finale that will leave the
  audience wishing there was more.

Circus Waltz

“For the Beauty of the Earth” is an arrangement of the traditional hymn composed in 1863 by Folliott S. Pierpoint as he was inspired by the beauty of creation around him. My take on the hymn adds new melodic content to complement the original theme. The contrasting upbeat and lyrical sections offer great opportunities for teaching appropriate articulation and style. As the piece progresses, I encourage performers and listeners to envision the many natural wonders (forests, mountains, waterfalls) that make our Earth beautiful to behold.

For the Beauty of the Earth

Proclamation! Is an exciting piece for intermediate/advanced middle
  school or beginner high school band. It's great for teaching 3/4 time
  signature, accented vs. legato playing, and dynamic contrast. The bright
  melodies and fanfare feel will be engaging for students and audiences alike,
  making this an excellent piece to open any concert.  Many parts double each other allowing for
  flexible instrumentation.

Proclamation!

Liftoff! An Overture for Concert Band is a lively piece that is a great
  opener for any concert. It mixes a variety of motifs that simulate a flock of
  birds taking flight. Careful attention should be made to ensure proper
  balance of these motifs especially in the middle section. The whole piece is
  a musical journey that depicts birds flying through all sorts of twists and
  turns that the world throws at them. At the end of the piece, the birds reach
  their destination with an uneasy, yet satisfying conclusion that will leave
  them eager to take off once again.

Liftoff!

Onyx Vibrations is a piece which is inspired by the many legends of onyx
  stones. Since ancient times, onyx has been believed to absorb negative energy
  that it senses in the world around it, increasing regeneration and happiness
  for its user. It is said that Queen Cleopatra of Egypt wore black onyx for
  these reasons and that the onyx would vibrate to alert her of potential
  danger. It is these vibrations that this title is based off. The piece has
  three sections: Allegro, Adagio, and recapitulation of the Allegro. The
  Allegro sections represent the negativity and darkness that onyx protects its
  users from, while the Adagio contrasts by representing the regeneration of
  happiness and a renewing of the mind. The piece concludes with a rush of dark
  energy that the onyx captures.

Glory Ablaze

Laetus Spiritus (Latin for joyful spirit) is a thrilling concert overture based on a simple syncopated theme first stated in the trumpets that recurs throughout the piece.  This is contrasted with a legato theme from chalumeau clarinets and horns with subsequent variations.  The overture is bookended by a fanfare derived from the main theme that grabs the listeners attention and closes with a satisfying conclusion.

Lullaby expresses a parent's love for their child throughout different stages of adolescence with each stanza representing a different time in a child's life.  The first begins in their pre-teen era where they are completely dependent upon the support of their parents.  The second sees the child in their teenage years where higher stakes of responsibility are thrust upon them and worries of youth fading away trouble them.  The final fast-forwards to the end of their high school days as they are released to explore the world on their own.  The lyrics and music progress in intensity throughout to represent the growing tensions of the child's life.  However, all fades away as the piece concludes signifying that no matter how far away from home they go, they can always return to a restful home.  This reflective piece makes for a perfect addition to a graduation commencement program.
