Timothy Mahr's inspiration for his remarkable band score was the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917) led by Sir Ernest Shackelton in which twenty-eight men set out on a ship called Endurance to attempt the first land crossing of the Antarctic. The ill-fated expedition has become recognized as an epic feat of endurance. The expedition photographer, Frank Hurley, preserved the images he captured during the nearly three-year ordeal, providing modern documentarians an amazing trove of source materials.
