Erlebach, P. - Sonata No. 5, Mvts. 6, 7 and 8

Erlebach (1605 - 1648) was a prolific German composer. His compositions include orchestral and chamber music, operas, cantatas, Masses and oratorios. Most of his works (over 1000 compositions)were destroyed in 1735 during a fire in Rudolstadt. Instrumentation & Ensemble Skills Because this piece is arranged for three violins without a traditional basso continuo or lower string instrument (like cello or viola), it serves as an excellent educational tool for violin students. Independence of Parts: Students must learn to hold their own independent melodic lines rather than just following a primary melody. Intonation & Blending: Playing in a homogeneous trio (all violins) requires precise intonation, as slight tuning mismatches are easily noticed. Students will need to focus on blending their tone colors. Chamber Cues: Without a conductor, players must practice leading, breathing together, and passing the melody seamlessly from one violin to another. Style and Key Key of E Minor: This is a very comfortable and resonant key for the violin, utilizing the open G, D, and A strings for sympathetic vibrations, while introducing students to the expressive, slightly melancholic character of the minor mode.
