Erlkonig

Franz Schubert's Erlkonig, composed in 1815 when he was just 18, is one of the most dramatic and enduring works in the art song repertoire. Based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's eerie and supernatural ballad of the same name, the piece tells the story of a desperate father racing through the night with his ailing child, who is haunted by the alluring yet sinister voice of the Erlkinga mythical harbinger of death.
