Originally written for band and newly arranged for full orchestra, Essential reflects the courage and perseverance of frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Scored for standard orchestra with woodwinds in 2s, clarinets in B-flat and A, and trumpets in B-flat and C, this work requires five percussionists. It begins with a dark, moody chorale, evolves into a hopeful string melody with Americana harmonies, and moves through joyful and stormy contrasts before a triumphant climax gives way to a quiet, reflective ending.
