The Sands of Time is a piece that I began to brainstorm in the fall of 2024, after Brian Theodorson (a conductor of New Horizons Band) offered me an opportunity to write for the band. Around the same time, one of my close friends Ethan Perez used the term “lost to the sands of time” in a text, and the concept for the piece was sealed. This piece aims to depict how I process the passing of time, as well the intense emotions that accompany the process. The conception of this piece could not have come at a better time (no pun intended) as recently graduating college and not being in school for the first time since I can remember has brought on intense emotions, including, nostalgia, confusion, dread, disorientation, confidence, hopelessness, and a general feeling of grief for the past. These emotions can be heard throughout the piece. The same words used to describe my emotions above are also seen in every musician‘s part, marking certain sections of the piece as it is played. The piece also uses unique percussion instruments such as a wind machine, a thunder tube, and a rain stick; all to convey the programmatic element of being lost in a sandstorm. Writing and rehearsing The Sands of Time has been very monumental for me, as it has helped me realize that expressing my emotions through an instrumental medium is not only a core aspect of my musical voice, but it is also something that is essential for my existence.

Dances From a Forbidden Land is a percussion ensemble piece debuted by the NMSU percussion studio in the fall of 2022. This piece is meant to depict a programmatic element of exploring and interacting with a forbidden land. Maybe a jungle, mountain, or other worldly terrain.  There are many unique instruments used to convey this feeling, such as a lion's roar, bird calls, and a Mayan death whistle. This piece explores many different textures from aggressive, to sensitive, to minimalist. The work also explores the 20th century composition technique of aleatoric time signatures where the performers create an ambient texture while relying on cues, as opposed to feeling a unified pulse. This percussion ensemble provides a mix of challenging parts, minimalist like patterns, and simple full ensemble impacts. All with a contemporary style. An advanced high school group, or young collegiate percussion ensemble would find this piece engaging, while also challenging their musical maturity.

Amya Saves the Magic is a piece made possible and brought together by the Sing Me A Story foundation.  SMAS works to connect children's stories in special circumstances with song writers and composers who turn their stories into full pieces of music! Amya Saves the Magic is a story by Violet, from Roswell New Mexico, about A magical forest with Elves and Ogres who fight over the magic in the forest. Within the story, we meet our protagonist named Amya who is a secret superhero with the power of transformation. Amya works to teach the Elves and Ogres how to work together to bring peace and protect the magic in the forest. 

     This story was then used as an outline to write a full concert band piece for Goddard High School in Roswell New Mexico. The story is then presented is full, as written by Violet, as narration over the ensemble. Violet and her Family were in attendance at the premier, and saw their story displayed to them through the medium of concert band. 

     This piece offers mature, involved, exposed, and straight forward writing for winds and percussion, as well as accessible 21st century techniques such as playing ad liberty, extended techniques, and an electronic sound effect; all to fully capture the essence of Violets Story.

Amya Saves the Magic

Fantasia and Rondo for Timpani is exactly what the name implies! This piece combines two renaissance and baroque composition techniques into one solo while being composed with a modern language, and of course, modern timpani writing. The beginning of the work aims to emulate the historical piano fantasies, and their improvatory nature, mostly free of meter or key restrictions. Then, the work finds it's groove with the introduction of the A theme of the rondo. This theme is returned to throughout the piece, flowing just like a traditional rondo would. These forms were chosen for the piece because of my connection to them. I found fantasias so interesting while learning about them in my undergraduate studies and simply loved the idea of an improvised introduction that sets the tone of the preceding music. Concerning the later; the rondo is a form I can relate to hip-hop and rap music, genres I grew up listening to that have heavily influenced my musical taste and style. Most hip-hop or rap songs flow very similarly to a rondo. The hook of the song would be the A theme, while each verse could be a B, C and D theme. While many rondos have codas, many rap and hip-hop songs have clear outros, or instrumental outros where the vocals are taken out and the beat shines. Fantasia and Rondo for Timpani is a great piece for collegiate percussion students who are experienced with solo timpani, intricate and fast pedaling, as well as historical musical forms.
