The work begins with an ad libitum introduction on piano, which presents a series of harmonies, creating an expressive passage from which the trumpet emerges as the solo instrument. In this phrase the intervallic characteristic is employed, which predominates throughout the work. It is immediately preceded by an Allegro con brio in the style of Rondo in which the triple staccato of the trumpet is highlighted and which alternates with a texture of syncopated rhythm. Subsequently there is a musical moment which alludes to a locomotive beginning its journey slowly, and culminating in the final fugue.
