Written in memory of Don Knox, former Band Director of the Galax High School Band from Galax, VA, this tune was one of his favorites. I was given the honor to arrange this piece by Richard Galyean, Director of Bands of the University of Virginia at Wise and former student of Mr. Knox. This piece is a memory, a dream, and a reflection on one of our American Classics. The 6/4 time signature gives a displaced feeling, or a dream, of reflecting on one of our nations greatest struggles and growing pains. A trio of bassoon, tuba, and bass clarinet invoke hunting memories of the soldiers that gave their lives for what they believed in. A dream like sequence occurs of the main theme, transitioning through all the instruments and eventually into individual solos. After a brief build, the main theme takes over in great clarity, and then fades away like a dream as the solo clarinet takes us back to reality. This piece is targeted toward mature high school groups and college groups alike.
