"Fanfare for Friendship" is a musically satisfying concert opener featuring brass and percussion. It uses a bugle call, a lyrical contrasting melody, and pop-punk inspired harmonies. The work is dedicated to "the human and animal companions who make life worth living."
Conceived with the orchestral brass and percussion sections in mind, this powerful fanfare also works for wind bands. While accessible by good high school and community bands, this would shine in collegiate and professional orchestra and wind bands as a concert opener. The work begins with a stately bugle call, which is answered by the drums. A tutti moment follows, as the opening motive is passed around the ensemble. We quickly modulate from Bb major to G major, and a lyrical (harmonically pop-punk influenced) melody follows. The opening fanfare returns in Bb major, before a whirlwind circle of fourths progression takes us to a massive double-plagal cadence.
Scored for 4.3.3.2(euph.), tmp. +3 (euphonium is optional).
