The material for Fanfare for the Return of Shadow is derived from Michael Burritt’s composition Shadow Chasers. The composer used several of Burritt's rhythmic themes and has dispersed them throughout the fanfare. The piece was written as a celebration of Burritt's return to the Eastman School of Music as their new percussion professor. It was premiered by the Interlochen Percussion Ensemble.
