This composition was commissioned for the Mid-South Symphonic Band to commemorate its 35th anniversary. Founded in 1990, the band has fostered a vibrant musical community, bringing together 50 to 70+ dedicated musicians from the greater Chattanooga area each week.

When tasked with creating a work for this significant milestone, I considered various thematic inspirations, including those that might evoke the spirit of Chattanooga and the surrounding states of Georgia and Tennessee. However, I was ultimately drawn to the intrinsic power and versatility of the ensemble itself, particularly the wind instruments.

This piece explores the dynamic energy inherent in wind playing, where soaring woodwind passages and majestic brass statements are propelled by a driving percussion pulse. The resulting sonic landscape evokes a sense of flight, a metaphor for the band's own journey of musical exploration and shared passion. It is my sincere hope that this composition captures the spirit and vitality of the Mid-South Symphonic Band, celebrating their rich history and looking forward to their continued musical endeavors.

David, King of the Jews, was a landmark figure in Jewish culture. He was a boy, chosen by God, made king, and has since been celebrated for his honesty, his transparency, his joy, and his contributions to his not only his people's culture, but also the way his people worshiped. He was a flawed individual whose troubles and misdeeds were laid bare for all to see. This is part of what makes him so important an historical figure: through his flaws God's mercy and glory were displayed. David was a warrior and an artist, a man of passion and of faith, a man truly after God's own heart.

This work was written in honor of Kathy James Allen.

Kathy and I never spoke with each other muchareally only while her husband was the Interim Minister of Music at Mississippi Avenue Baptist Church many years agoabut I have always been impressed and amazed by her steadfast and uncompromising faith in God and His love. This piece has been on my mind to do for several years, but it wasn't until recently that I had a solid grasp on what I wanted to asay.a Thank you, Kathy, for your inspirationa I know that if you've

1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE is the address of the United States of America's
  White House, where the U.S. President and other leaders run and manage our
  country to the best of their ability. This work was written in honor of those
  men and women who dedicate their lives in service to this country. It is
  meant to evoke the sense of Americana found in the works of Aaron Copland,
  Leonard Bernstein, and even John Williams. As the music begins, we hear a
  solo trumpet on a simple melody, soon joined by a brass choir in a dramatic
  swell. The melody develops further in the woodwinds and becomes multiple
  lines echoed and repeated before we change gears and the music picks up pace,
  becoming a new theme that races forward and leaps between sections of the
  band playfully before slowing again, becoming an ode to the fallen. My hope
  is that the melodies and harmonies in this work conjure a sense American
  pride and hope for the future, a fierce pride for our country and those
  who've served her.

A work for concert band, "An Abundance of Life" was written in response to witnessing a complete restoration of the human spirit after a tragic and life-destroying moral error in judgment. This destruction of self threatened family and friends and was difficult to own up to. It took courage to step forward and begin the process of restoration. It didn't happen overnight and came in hesitant fits and great strides. Still, restoration came, and the dark was a friend no more. The light of truth and surrender healed old wounds and planted the seeds of life.

An Abundance of Life

A short work perfect for the start of a morning church service, "A Morning Overture" explores the melodies of "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" and "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" in an orchestral setting. The work stretches the melodies and traditional harmonies, engaging the listener and performer.

SATB Octavo

An atmospheric work depicting the "Long Mountain" found along the Colorado Front Range, known commonly as "Pikes Peak" and named after Zebulon Pike and his failed expedition to climb to the mountain's summit. The work describes the mountain in musical form, then segues to Pike's effort to scale the mountain. There is a hint, here and there, of the Arapahoe Indian presence which existed before Pike. "Long Mountain" is, after all, a translation of their original name for it: Heeyotoyoo.

  people and lush landscape of northwestern Georgia, looking down from Lookout
  Mountain upon the beautiful

Brass Ensemble

Black Holes, known as Singularities, are regions of space in which
  gravity is so strong nothing, not even light, can escape. They are thought to
  be formed when very massive stars collapse at the end of their life cycle,
  where they may continue to grow by absorbing mass from their surroundings.
  Black Holes are generally theorized to exist at the center of every galaxy,
  their intense gravitational fields literally holding galaxies together,
  keeping them from flying apart.
    
    
    
    Inspired by a NASA article regarding the Black Hole found in the Perseus
  Cluster wherein the Black Hole was found to emit sound waves at the precise
  pitch of B-flat some 57 octaves below Middle-C, I puzzled out a musical way
  to incorporate this one droning tone throughout a work while still
  maintaining a sense of movement and exploration, never letting things become
  dull.
    
    
    
    As foundational forces in our universe, I sought to describe Singularities
  are powerful--terrifyingly so--yet beautiful components of Creation. Even as
  utterly destructive as they are, the universe could not exist without them.
  They represent a stunning example of the universe's complexity.

Singularity

Written in honor of the formation of the High Plains Music Ensemble in
  Strasburg, CO, and winner of the 2014 Sul Ross State Composition Contest, the
  "High Plains Suite" is a work in three continuous movements
  depicting life on the high plains of the United States: the hope and
  inspiration settlers experienced when moving into the West, the Americana
  thatis inherent to country living, and the victory over adversity. This
  work uses an anvil to paint a sound picture of the work on the intercontinental
  railroad as east meets west in the center of Colorado.

High Plains Suite

Composed for Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church, this works imagines one
  leaping off Lookout Mountain and soaring above the Chattanooga Valley, over
  the entirety of the community below, over the entire mission field.

Flight of the Saints

The Walnut Street Bridge is a "must-see" spot in Chattanooga,
  TN. This piece is a work in three continuous movements depicting three moods
  regarding the Walnut Street Bridge and the Tennessee River it soars over. The
  first is the joyous energy in going for a walk through downtown Chattanooga,
  crossing the bridge that connects the two sides of the city. The sights and
  sounds of the trip -- street musicians, vendors, people talking, etc. -- all
  speak to the vibrant energy of the city. The second movement illustrates the
  grandness of both the bridge and the mighty Tennessee river as it cuts a
  meandering path through the city and around Lookout Mountain to the south.
  The movement starts sweetly as the water slides calmly by, but as you look
  further along the river you realize the majesty of this great moving body.
  And as the eye continues along the shores one sees the industry made possible
  by the river. This third movement describes the hard work and productivity of
  those who owe their livelihoods to the Tennessee River.

A Walk Across the Walnut
