Jean "Roxanne" Lanier (1918-2005) was a poet, author, spiritual teacher, and philanthropist. Three of the songs (“Walking Alone,” “The Apple and the Mirror,” and “The Embrace of Life”) were premiered at the Berklee College of Music by Donna Larisey in 1993 (with the composer as the accompanist). The two additional pieces (“The Islands are Asking” and “Phase”) were composed and premiered in 1997. The poems are ordered to musically form an arc beginning with the realization that one is beginning to exit, “middle age,” through the reconciling that one is satisfied with the life that has transpired, and prepared for whatever lies ahead.
