This arrangement of Pomp and Circumstance is written in a fully flexible format to allow the director to assign parts as needed for reduced instrumentation, and it is intended specifically for graduation ceremonies. It's made to help the director and the students achieve a strong sound in a short amount of time with limited instrumentation.

There are two optional percussion breaks meant to both engage the percussionists and to give the winds a chance to rest, and there are two optional ending points to help with timing the piece to coincide with the end of a graduation processional.  The end of the four-bar drum breaks may also be used as optional ending points if needed.

I sincerely hope that this arrangement makes preparing for and performing at graduations an easier endeavor for both the band members and the director.

This arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner is intended to be playable by a minimum of three wind or mallet instruments, and it is written specifically for bands that are young or have limited instrumentation.  It will sound best with at least one percussionist in the ensemble if possible.  Its purpose is to enable small or young groups to deliver a solid performance of one of the most important pieces that bands play.  

An optional piano part is included to help with rehearsals or to reinforce the existing part 1,2, and 3 lines.  It closely follows the wind and mallet parts for each line.  The flexible format for the piece should allow directors to maintain a reasonably balanced instrumentation even in small bands where the variety of instruments may vary drastically from year to year.  

Fermatas have been removed from this version so that the tempo stays steady throughout.  Instead, the traditional held notes and pauses are written into the notation at tempo.  The print format is done in marching band folio size to allow for versatility for both marching and concert groups.

I wrote this for my own bands to use in a rural setting just after the pandemic, and it was a tremendous help in both indoor and outdoor settings. I hope it serves your groups as well as it served mine.

Hard Knock Rock is named for the knock-like eighth note rhythms that it contains.  The wind parts consist of two basic lines that are doubled throughout the ensemble to boost confidence in younger players and to help cover for sections that may have fewer numbers.  The clarinets, alto saxophones, and trumpets have both lines written as a Part 1 and Part 2 to allow the director more flexibility in assigning parts to balance out the ensemble.  Some instruments have split notes at certain points to give players with a greater high range the chance to develop that aspect of their skills.

     For the percussion, Hard Knock Rock is written to work with only a snare drum and bass drum.  However, if you have the players, any combination of the other percussion parts adds fun and pizazz to the piece!  Mallet parts don't specify a particular mallet instrument to allow for more flexibility in using whatever mallet instruments the conductor prefers.

<p>March of the Angry Chihuahua Dogs is a piece for beginning band that is composed using the first five notes of the concert Bb scale. There are two basic wind parts doubled throughout the instruments, and the mallet part will sound good on whatever mallet instruments you have available. The trombone glissandos and wind trills are intended to add to the fun for your players. The piece may be performed with only snare drum and bass drum, but there are also parts for crash cymbals, ride cymbal, and even a marching machine if you have one. I know that both you and your band will have a great time working up this piece!</p>

Carpe Diem for flexible ensemble concert band is written as an easy concert piece or a recessional for graduations. This arrangement of Carpe Diem is written in a fully flexible format to allow the director to assign parts as needed for reduced instrumentation.  It is playable with just four horns and two percussionists, but there are additional percussion parts for more players that will add tasteful ornamentation to the piece.

The title is my tip of the hat to my high school English teacher, Connie Moore. I learned the term in her class years ago. She taught so many essential skills that I still use today even in my approach to music composition. I wrote the song intending for it to carry a sense of excitement and hope for what lies ahead. I thought that Carpe Diem was an appropriate name for the piece and a small way to honor a teacher who made a big impact on my life.

With a slightly different take on this classic, this fun arrangement is written with fully flexible options to fit your band's instrumentation.  The percussion parts work with just one drum set player, but there are optional parts for more players if you have them.

When The Saints Go Marching In

Moonbeam Serenade is an alto saxophone feature with concert band accompaniment.  It's based off of a poem I wrote in which the idea is that moonlight shining on a meadow figuratively releases the songs, the history, the memories of all those who have passed through that field.  It is intended to symbolize the various lives that have been in the meadow throughout the years and to communicate their feelings, losses, and hopes.  The reading of the poem at the opening of the piece is optional, but a good narrator will certainly help to set the tone of the piece.

The title of Dandelion Wind comes from watching the white seeds blow off of a dandelion head in a strong breeze. Once in motion, the seeds travel with the wind until they come to a final resting place on the ground below. This piece flows along in that vein of a seedling's windblown journey.

Dandelion Wind has a slight Celtic feel to it, and it is written as a flute duet with no piano accompaniment.

Carpe Diem is an easy concert piece written from the perspective of a
  graduation recessional. It's intended to carry a sense of excitement and hope
  for what lies ahead.  Its rhythmic
  content is simple, but it generates an energetic expectation of great things
  to come!

The second movement of Beowulf Fantasy musically portrays the section of the Beowulf poem where Beowulf arrives in Denmark to free King Hrothgar's land from the evil menace of Grendel.  The piece is divided into five distinct sections:  the majestic Beowulf Arrives In Denmark, the festive Feast At Heorot, mysterious Night-time, the combative Grendel Strikes!, and triumphant Beowulf Victorious!  

In the poem, Beowulf comes to aid King Hrothgar against Grendel.  They hold a feast in Hrothgar's mead hall, Heorot (the Hart).  Beowulf and his men stay the night in the mead hall.  Grendel attacks them during the night, there is a mighty struggle between him and Beowulf, and Beowulf finally rips off Grendel's arm.  Grendel flees from Heorot and later dies in the swamp.  

This piece can serve as a stand-alone selection or may be performed in sequence with Beowulf Fantasy Mvt.I.

What Child Is This? is a solid Christmas parade tune that can be learned quickly and sounds good even with limited instrumentation.   At just over one minute in length, this holiday favorite contains heavy doubling of parts, music for both three bass drums and four bass drums, and a part 1 and 2 for trombones and baritones.  The optional tambourine part for extra players adds energy to the song, but the percussion works well even if the tambourine is not available.  A mallet part and electric bass part are included in the case that the song might be performed in situations other than parades, and this arrangement fits well in both the parade environment and on the stage.

Appalachian Sunrise was actually inspired by watching a sunset over the hills in the Fort Chiswell area of Wythe County, Virginia.  I lived there at the time, and the sunset was just breathtaking.  I thought that it would be wonderful if I could see a sunrise come up over those same hills in the morning to start my day.  From there, I started writing Appalachian Sunrise.  It begins from the perspective of enjoying the sun rising up over the hills in the morning and the day slowly starting to hum to life.  Then, it's out the door to embrace the day and whatever grand adventures await.  The piece is intended to give the listener an eager anticipation for all the exciting potential that each day holds.

It's Got To Be Christmas features a vocal solo with concert band accompaniment, and it evokes as much Christmas imagery as can be wrapped up into one song.  It boxes up so many of the sights, the sounds, and the memories that we associate with Christmastime into a jazzy package that sets the stage for the holidays.  So break out the egg nog and get your jingle bells ready, cause it's GOT to be Christmas!

The first movement of Beowulf Fantasy is a musical interpretation of the beginning of the epic poem iBeowulfi.  In the poem, mighty Beowulf of the Geats sets sail with fourteen chosen men to heroically free the land of the Danes from the evil monster named Grendel.  The first movement depicts Beowulfis journey across the sea to come to the aid of King Hrothgar against this unstoppable enemy.

     Powerful brass statements, agile woodwind passages, and active percussion parts characterize the piece.  After a bold but solemn opening, the song takes on a 6/8 tempo suitable for a sturdy ship cutting through icy Nordic waters!  This one is sure to thrill your players and audiences alike!
