Stephen Collins Foster composed over 175 songs.  Because they so accurately depicted in melody and lyrics the 19th century life of the common man, they have become America's folk songs.  Many were written for minstrel shows and characterized the mores of the time.  The songs are embodied with beautiful and easy to sing melodies, with simple harmonic foundations.
