Fountain

General or Lenten anthem for SATB voices, optional alto solo, optional congregation, and piano. Opening with a gentle piano solo, this arrangement of There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood brings new life to the early American hymn. The transition from the traditional 4/4 meter to a gentle 3/4 gives the singer lovely legato melody and text combinations. The first stanza introduces the traditional melody with the women singing the first phrase, followed by the men and then the full choir at the close of the stanza. In the second stanza, a new melodic line with an alto solo will be easily achieved by any of your altos. As the choir continues in four-part harmony, the congregation can be invited to join in singing stanza 3 as the anthem returns to the traditional melody. Pianists will want to spend time ensuring the flowing eighth-note phrases paint a musical picture of a flowing fountain.
