Imagine the snow is just starting to form. It is not a heavy or wet snow, but a light and fluffy
snow. It melts as soon as it touches your skin. One flake at a time, it builds up and there is full
snowfall. What melody do you think of? The melody of Freezing Snow.
Freezing Snow is the first work I ever wrote for marimba and voice, mixing catchy vocal
melodies with rhythmic and harmonic support from the marimba. Many of my friends and
colleagues have complimented me by saying the melody gets stuck in their head! This
happened so much to composer Justin Riley, that he arranged it for choir and marimba! In fact,
after he mentioned his interest in that venture, I officially dared him on YouTube to arrange it!
Justins arrangement adds a majestic layer of harmony in the vocals and takes the pressure off
of the marimbist to sing while playing. This opens up Freezing Snow to be accessible to many
more singers and players. Using patterns and permutations from the best of intermediate
marimba literature and legato vocals, this work is a fun piece for singers and marimbists alike! I
hope after listening you will have Freezing Snow in your ear in your ear I mean the melody
of you know what I mean
When I wrote the lyrics to Freezing Snow, I was reflecting on life going by really fast. Are we
happy with what we have accomplished with our life? With each passing winter, we might look
at our life and analyze this with each year we are chasing the feeling of success and flow, but
we encounter hardships and even death, which is stuff we dont want to know! Towards the
end, the lyrics hint at a meaning of life. Our purpose here in this consciousness is to grow and
be the best version of ourselves we can be. Once we realize that we can glow with flying
colors! I guess thats living life, you know?
