Garden of Roses
for String Quartet
Duration: approx. 4.5 minutes | Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Garden of Roses is a single-movement work for string quartet inspired by the Medieval Cypriot folk song "Red Rose", one of the most lyrically expressive and Western-influenced melodies in the traditional music of Cyprus.
The piece unfolds in two contrasting sections. A slow, expressive introduction presents the folk theme in the first violin, accompanied by warm, sustained harmonies. This gives way to a fast, rhythmically vibrant section filled with playful interaction and light contrapuntal writing, offering a fresh and colorful take on a centuries-old tune.
Perfect for recitals, festival programs, or as a folk-inspired encore, "Garden of Roses" blends tradition with classical chamber writing, inviting players to explore nuance, balance, and ensemble dialogue.
Includes full score and individual parts.
