The Perils of Victory is a patriotic, concert-style march intended for public performance. It is not suitable for marching due to technical passages and scope of form. It was composed for a USO march-writing contest in 1979 to honor the United States military. The only guidelines given were that it had to be in the style and structure of John Philip Sousa. I gave this march a 'Medium-Advanced' grade level mainly due to the demanding phrases and endurance needed in the brass, and the obbligato lines for the upper woodwinds in the grandioso strain. Enjoy this wonderful performance by the United States Army Field Band.

Grade

"Licorice Time" will give your clarinet section a run for its
  money with this 1920s-style novelty piece. A real crowd pleaser. Dubbed 'the
  licorice stick' (among other colorful phrases), the clarinet shows off its
  technical dexterity in a range from low F to high F. It is filled with
  humorous percussion effects and clarinet quotes from the well-known
  literature. Many scale- and arpeggio-like exercises are also present
  providing the "etudes" in the title page sub-title. The accompaniment
  will give your band musicians some enjoyable parts to play as well. This
  piece should be performed with no less than six capable clarinet players, two
  on a part. Notes: 9x12 score and parts. Grade 4, Medium/Advanced. Running

"Lontano" is a very expressive smooth jazz solo that incorporates lyrical sections with interpretive phrasing, and harder funk style in the bridge and open solo. It utilizes only a jazz combo for accompaniment - guitar, electric piano, synth, electric bass, and drums. It also includes a tenor saxophone solo part to give the soloist an option of either instrument. It has been graded "Medium Easy". An easier solo to introduce your musicians to this genre of jazz with it's varying character of lyrical and funk styles. It can also give the brass section of your jazz band a breather at a full-length public performance.

These two carols arranged for woodwind quartet are basically in a
  traditional hymn-like fashion. Both pieces will work beautifully for church
  services or concerts, and any holiday event. 
    
    Features: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen has a slow section with more unusual
  harmony, and a modulation for the last chorus. Angels We Have Heard On High
  (Theme &amp; Variations) states the theme twice, then the four
  instrumentalists have their own variation before they all join together for
  the closing Coda. Graded "Medium-Easy", it will suit most age
  groups. (NOTES: Flute, Bb Clarinet, Horn in F, Bassoon, 8.5x11 scores and
  parts).

Woodwind Quartet

The Union is a piano composition by American-born composer/pianist Louis
  Moreau Gottschalk from 1862 that represents an early American patriotic
  warhorse. His mixture of three nationalistic songs from the Civil War era
  creates a brilliant showpiece for the piano that adapts magnificently as a
  concert band attraction for public performances such as the 4th of July. It
  is given a 'Medium-Advanced' (grade 4) rating due to the upper woodwind
  technique required, the prominent use of the French horn section, and the low
  brass dexterity in the 16th-note triplet groupings. (NOTES: 11x17 score,
  8.5x11 parts)

L'Union

Five wonderful selections for woodwind quartets utilizing four of the
  standard quintet instrumentation. 
  Combinations of instruments required: A) fl, ob, cl, bsn,  B) fl, cl, hn, bsn,  C) ob, cl, hn, bsn.  These pieces cover the classical,
  impressionistic, and romantic styles. Great for students developing
  technique, balance, color, and different genres. Excellent repertoire for
  solo &amp; ensemble competitions. Two pieces are fast, two are slow, and one

Five Concert Pieces for Woodwind Quartets

Instrument Type

This wonderful quartet by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) is little known, but
  a truly magnificent chamber piece. Verdi wrote many chamber works, but only
  the string quartet survived. This adaptation for saxophones captures all the
  technical brilliance and romantic beauty of the original 1873 composition,
  and lends itself superbly to the saxophone. Since this music was originally
  conceived for string players in mind, it creates some interesting gymnastics
  for wind instruments. Adapted for the standard quartet instrumentation -
  soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxes. In 4 movements. Approximate running
  time: 22 min. Grade 5--Advanced.

Pablo Sarasate was a virtuoso violinist who composed many well-known
  showcase solos for violin. This one adapts itself very well for flute.
  "Zapateado" is a delightful Spanish dance in 6/8 time that will
  feature any advancing flutist. 
    
    
    
    Originally scored by the composer for violin and piano, this concert band
  arrangement has been left in the original key of A major not only due to it
  being more suitable for the range of the flute, but it can also be performed
  by a violin soloist. Both the violin part and rehearsal piano part for either
  instrument have been included. What a nice surprise it would be for an
  audience to hear a virtuoso violin solo with band! Either solo instrument is
  sure to be a real crowd pleaser.

Zapateado

This two-fold solo guitar feature incorporates two distinct styles for
  the guitarist to display - melodic Latin-Rock and upbeat Samba at the solo
  section. The form is an expanded AABA format with 4- &amp; 8-bar transition
  breaks between. Standard 17-piece jazz band instrumentation with Tenor Sax 2
  doubling on flute, and auxiliary percussion (shaker &amp; vibraslap). Graded
  "Medium-Advanced" due to the trumpet ranges, and advanced technique
  needed in some sections.
    
    
    
    (NOTES: For time on the video sample, the repeated section at the first A
  takes the 2nd ending, and there is only one solo chorus. On the video
  recording, a clarinet is used in place of the guitar as the featured solo

Jazz Ensemble Score & Parts

Arranged in a modest, mostly hymn-like fashion, these eight Christmas
  carols for saxophone quartet are some of the most well-known (see score title
  page for selections). They offer a simple musical approach and include
  beautiful melodic lines, variations in one selection, and solo lines
  throughout for all four players. Wonderful for honing intonation and balance
  skills. Technically moderate, these carols could be performed by just about
  any age group. Great for holiday concerts and church events. Scored for the
  typical quartet consisting of soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone
  saxophones.

Eight Christmas Carols for Saxophone Quartet

"Heroic Overture" is a grade 5 composition for band that
  requires a strong horn section. It is a patriotic compilation of several
  individual segments written for the television series "Heroes of the
  Armed Forces" - Main Title, Battle Sequence, Valor (In Memoriam), and
  Main Title (reprise). 
    
    Scored originally for studio orchestra and synthesizers, it was reworked as
  an overture for band in 2021 by the composer. This work comprises
  fanfare-like lines for the brass, technical passages for the woodwinds, and
  utilizes various percussion. Heroic Overture will work well for an opener or
  closer at a public or patriotic concert performance.

Heroic Overture

Rudy Wiedoeft's novelty "Saxophobia" from 1918 is given a new
  voice in this version arranged for clarinet. It is a delightful, fun piece
  that displays technical brilliance with rapid notes, staccato tonguing, pitch
  bends and flutter tongue. The piano part has been rewritten for the altered
  clarinet key. This work can be used as an audition solo or recital

This Holiday classic carol arrangement is a high energy, fast swing jazz
  band chart that features a few surprises. It includes sections of dixieland,
  free jazz, clarinet and piccolo, and even a short saloon piano break. There
  are solos for alto sax, drums, piano, and guitar. Graded
  "Medium-Advanced" due to various technical and musical passages,
  doubling in the reeds, and the trumpet range up to high F#.  (NOTES: 8.5x11 landscape score &amp; 8.5x11

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

A wonderful collection of six pieces from different musical genres have been arranged for saxophone quartet with the traditional instrumentation of soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. Styles include baroque, classical, romantic, and impressionism. These various quartets will provide opportunities for saxophonists to focus on basics - technique, tone, balance, intonation, diverse styles &amp; tempos. Six Concert Pieces for Saxophone Quartet

Saxophone Quartet-SATB Quartet

This dazzling movement from Prokofiev's second piano sonata (1912) is a
  brilliant showcase for woodwind quintet. It boasts numerous challenges in
  technical prowess with wide interval leaps, polymeter sections, and countless
  accidentals. It lends itself well to the personalities of the five woodwinds.
  This fast-paced movement includes typical Prokofiev dissonance and multiple
  simultaneous key areas. Originally composed for piano, it is a true test of
  focus and endurance.  A wonderful
  20th-century concert piece.
    
    Graded "Advanced" due to the high level of technique needed to
  perform this adaptation.

Prokofiev's unique and quirky style really shines in these five short but diverse piano pieces from the composer's earlier life (age 16 and 21). Technically challenging for advancing woodwind quartets, but also superb for articulation and rhythmic accuracy.  (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon)

PROKOFIEV - "5 PIECES FOR WOODWIND QUARTET"

This is the 4th and last movement of a marvelous string quartet by
  Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901). It is little known, but a truly magnificent
  chamber piece. Verdi wrote many chamber works, but only the string quartet
  survived. This movement adapts itself very well to the ranges of the four
  clarinets - Eb, Bb, alto, &amp; bass. Also included is an optional Bb
  clarinet part to sub for the Eb clarinet.
    
    Since this music was originally conceived for string players in mind, it
  creates some interesting gymnastics for wind instruments....not to mention
  the relentless phrases. The grade level for this piece is
  "Medium-Advanced" due to the technical difficulties in all four
  parts and the numerous accidentals.

Originally written for flute, this set of variations is a wonderful
  showpiece for any aspiring young clarinetist or professional as a recital
  piece, audition solo, or encore. It is graded 'Medium' due to some of the
  technical passages, especially in the 4th variation. This version has been
  expanded slightly with newly written material, and the key was altered to
  accommodate the clarinet.

Variations on a theme by Rossini

Notturno is a tone poem for flute and piano trio. It has optional solo
  parts for oboe and alto saxophone. It suits all three solo instruments
  equally well and takes advantage of the full range. This work has lyrical
  phrases as well as challenging technical passages. 
    
    The string parts have phrase markings included, but not bow direction
  markings. I have left this task up to the individual performers. Good solo
  piece for an audition or recital.
