This work begins with a soli statement for the trumpets and then the saxes and then the trombones. The theme is not cast in the form of the blues, but the solo section evolves into the blues. The backgrounds in the open solo sections are optional. The feel of the work is that of a black church shuffle. The chart is supposed to be fun and played with a sense of swagger. The highest note for the trumpets is D on top of the second ledger line.
