This is one of two settings of beautiful African American spirituals for treble choir by Jonathan Hellerman. On the face of it, this is not a difficult piece to sing in either one or two parts, but there is plenty of opportunity for singers to practice and grow in interpretation and choral sound with subtle changes in dynamics and tempo. The traditional melody is presented simply, but the piano accompaniment adds drama to the composition that makes it very satisfying for a recital performance.
Written for Mr. Hellerman's middle school choir in Southern Maryland, this is a wonderful arrangement to introduce young (or older) singers to one of the most sublime songs from the spiritual tradition.
