Eilean nan Gobhar commissioned by the Symposium Symphony of Soils. "Our soils are not doing well. This has major consequences for our food security, our climate and our health. The answer is living agriculture, without artificial fertilizers and chemicals!"

The unspoilt Scottish landscape and the view of Eilean nan Gobhar or Goats Eliand were the inspiration for this work. The island is the gateway to Loch Ailort is a beautiful sight from Roshven.

Concert Band Score & Parts

From the Sea is a work in three section based on land reclamation. The
  first section (The New Land) expresses feelings of expectation and excitement
  that come with the new land. The seconds section (The Old Sea) is a nostalgic
  retrospect to the (old) sea. A sea that was sometimes turbulent, but also a
  source of life. In the third section (The Future Land) captures the joy of
  life on the new land to the present day.

From the Sea

A Tallis Anthem is an opener or concert work for concert band. It is based on If Ye Love Me by Thomas Tallis. He was one of the first to set the Rites of the Anglican Church on English words. If Ye Love Me is a classic example of the new English anthems: mainly homophonic, but with short moments of imitation.

The opening is a triumphant version of the first homophonic verses of the song, interrupted by a calm melody based on a motif from the original. The anthem is played by a quartet that can stand in front of the orchestra or elsewhere in the hall. This is followed by a modern anthem that leads to a triumphant conclusion.

A Tallis Anthem

Sic Parvis Magna (Thus, from small beginnings, great things come) is the
  motto of the explorer and sea captain Sir Francis Drake. Although his life is
  not undisputed, his development from 13-year-old deck cleaner to vice admiral
  of the English fleet is an inspiration. Drake sailed around the world three
  times, the first time as a 23-year-old pirate with his cousin John
  Hawkins.
    
    				
    
    The heroic Maestoso sections portray the high spirits of a journey over
  sea. Although there is always the outlook of danger, and memories of home and
  loved ones.

Sic Parvis Magna

Carols of Old is a fantasy based on two Christmas carols: Lo how a Rose and Coventry Carol. Both songs seem to have originated in the sixteenth century, hence the title. The songs are used in their original form, but also transformed into a rhapsodic style. The work can be performed with or without chorus.

Rise is a concert piece for Concert Band
    
    
    
    Rise is a reflection of the feelings of the composer after the Corona
  pandemic. Time to start up again, however it felt so overwhelming when the
  music scene started again. So the composer needed to rise up to certain
  challenges, overcome them and settle again.
    
    
    
    The piece is build with the concept of the golden ratio or Phi in mind. The
  form is dictated by several overlapping golden ratio, in an attempt to find
  the right length for every part of the piece.

Rise

Saint Lambert was written for CMV Jeduthun Oldemarkt for their 110th
  anniversary (1905-2015). The work is based on the legend of Saint Lambert. He
  was appointed Bishop of Maastricht in the seventh century. The work opens
  with the main theme followed by the Sacred theme. The first part depicts the
  unstable political situation that eventually leads to the exile of Lambert.
  In the second part, we find Lambert braving the snow and cold while
  continuing to murmur his prayers, this miracle leading to his final
  declaration as saint. In the third part it is Ascension Day in Oldemarkt
  where the 'Lambertusmarkt' takes place, and we hear the Bach chorale
  "Als Vierzig Tag nach Ostern".
    
    
    
    The downloadable audio track can be used in the second part for the effect
  of a snow storm.
