Lehar wrote his Gold and Silver Waltz at the request of the socialite,
fashion trend-setter and arts patron (of Wagner and Smetana, among others)
Princess Pauline von Metternich for the eponymous ball she gave at Viennas
Sophiensale on January 27, 1902. She asked for something especially fine
and was rewarded with one of the masterworks of the twilight years of the
Viennese waltz.
Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.) has arranged this work for string quartet, with
careful attention to page turns. All
the page turns are in logical spots and with notes in the performers' parts
wherever a different player turns a page, so that members can cut off
together and synchronize the downbeat after each page turn.
