Graceful

Graceful (formerly The Young Salute) is a concert band work composed by Chen Qian, a renowned Chinese composer. It was commissioned by Beijing Chaoyang Normal College Affiliated Primary School. Inspired by the iconic image of a young survivor saluting rescuers after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the piece expresses sincere gratitude for life, dedication, and hope.

Musically, it blends lyrical warmth with grandeur. Gentle woodwinds open with tender melodies, while powerful brass and full ensemble build to stirring climaxes. Chen Qian masterfully integrates Western band techniques with Chinese lyrical sensibility, creating a deeply moving work that balances artistic depth and emotional resonance. It has become a widely performed piece in concert band repertoire.
