George Jacob Gershwin (1898-1937) Brooklyn, New York was an innovative American composer and pianist who started his career as a song plugger on Tin Pan Alley. His best-known orchestral works are Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928) as well as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935) These compositions and his popular songs made Gershwin a household name and international celebrity.
George studied with noted Ultra-Modernist composer Henry Cowell before moving to Paris intending to study with Nadia Boulanger. Nadia refused him as did Arnold Schoenberg not wanting to spoil the already developed and successful composer.
In addition to concert works that opened the classical music world to the new developments of American Jazz, Gershwin moved to Hollywood and composed numerous film scores. His popular song compositions comprise a big part of the Great Amercan Songbook. Poster is made from an original painting by Al Moretti.
