This advanced work for solo pianist leans into the physicality of Italian word toccare ("to touch").  This piece explores a wide variety of pianistic techniques beginning with a relentless alternation of the right and left hand.  From there, a suite of different touches and interactions between the hands, including crossing, creates intricate layers of touch.  The tonal arc of this work carries the listener from Eb to D with plenty of harmonic ambiguity along the way.  This piece was recorded by pianist Benjamin Harding for the album 'The Gilded Age'.

This work marries orchestral techniques and textures with the rich colors of an a capella vocal ensemble. I was inspired to create this multi-movement work after considering the expressive poetry of the classic hymn Praise to the Lord. Each verse suggested a different sound world, and I drew from an extensive palette of choral timbres to create a vocal composition in a symphonic style, which echoes the structure of a classical symphony with its opening movement, scherzo, slow movement, second scherzo, and finale with an extended coda (the "Amen").

Format

Scored for Concert Band, this work was premiered in an reduced instrumentation on March 6, 2022.  The piece was created as a companion to a sermon series on Romans that would culminate with this text. It is a reverent contemplation of God's transcendent nature: 

"Oh, the depth of the riches and widsom and knowledge God! How unsearcable are his judgements and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid? For from him and through im and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen."

The piece opens with a chaotic jumble of sound that opens out into a great echoing space representing eternity. The echo figuration recurs throughout to anchor the piece through its sections.  After the opening music that portrays wonder and mystery, a small scherzando section follows and it depcits the confused murmurings of human wisdom and earthly attempts to reduce God's ways to human scale. These efforts are ultimately frustrated and washed away by a third section that revisists the majesty of God and begins with a layering and building of staggered Amen figurations that layer and build to the final statement of Amen.

Concert Band Score & Parts

This accessible choral work is a setting of the Latin text from Psalm 51. It was originally composed as part of the music for a live stage production recounting the events in the Book of Acts. Its solemn opening is layered on with a weeping motif in the upper voices that together build with increasing desperation as the Psalmist pleads for forgiveness. It works well as a concert work, and also makes a suitable choral offering for any church service that focuses on penitence and humility (e.g. Ash Wednesday or Lent).  Choirs appreciate its straightforward writing and audiences are moved by its dark and searching tone.

THE BELLS demands a choir that is not afraid to embrace Poe's use of onomatopoeia and the use of syllables as pure timbre. The layering of parts requires that the text and leading lines be brought out in sharp relief against the accompanying choral background. Each of the movements begins with an introduction built on isolated words or syllables before the start of the text proper, in order to capture the mood and tone of each section of the poem: merriment, romantic rapture, frenzied chaos, ever-accumulating death. The poem's four sections evoke the arc of life: childhood, early adulthood, later adulthood, old age. It is a masterpiece of American poetic imagination, and I hope that my treatment will challenge choral artists to recreate its contemplations in multi-layered tapestries of vocal beauty.

The Bells

This work for piano, violin, viola, and cello is full of bittersweet nostalgia. Written for a short lm
that surveryed different stages of a marriage, this music accompanied the story of an elderly
couple whose passion and connection has dissolved. They have moments recalling the warmth of
the romance of their younger selves and this poignancy lls the piece with surges of dormant passion.
