This is an epic work for choirs, soloists and orchestra to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The symphony comprises four movements, each portraying the most significant events in each year of the war. It mourns the dead, salutes their sacrifice, and evokes a vision of England and her allies that inspired so much of the art and music of that time. The complete work premiered in London's Royal Albert Hall in October 2018 and in the U.S  on November 11, 2018 at Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis, and Carnegie Hall in New York.

The Great War Symphony

The Land was commissioned by the South Holland District Council (Lincolnshire, UK) to celebrate the changing seasons in that area.  It was first performed at St Mary Magdalene Church, Gedney on April 29th, 1995.Whilst the four-part choir relates the original poetry, the semi-chorus provides the folk melodies.  For much of the work they exist as separate units but there are occasions when they come together.  The string orchestra also serves to compliment the two choral groups and provide the opportunity for rich textures and antiphonal effects.  The only season' which is independent of the semi-chorus is Winter.  This is very much an introduction to the succeeding movements which, with their folk-song flavour, rely heavily on dance rhythms and a typically English' harmonic style.The celebration of beauty was one of the main elements of writing the poems.  The landscape, once dubbed the factory floor of England' is unique with wide and deep skies, tantalising skylines; patterns of colours on a panoramic scale.  Except for Winter, the poems are in strophic form, bound to the metre of the folk song which is the musical base to each movement.  In Summer, a liberty is taken in the creation of a new text for the refrain of Bring Fair'.

The Land

Six a cappella carols with modern texts by Andrew Hawes are in this collection. The Infant; The Shepherds and The Magi follow the structure of verse and chorus and are upbeat and full of the wonder and excitement that accompanies new life. They are interspersed with the reflective poetry of The Manger; The Oxen and The Star and provide a sense of overall momentum and contrast. As a whole, they make an effective collection for concert performance or used individually within a Christmas service.

The Nativity

An original tune has been composed for the traditional William Chatterton Dix text. This a cappella carol setting has a flexible tempo without set dynamic markings. The musical expression is contrasted between the first two verses that ask the questions and the confident answer of adoration in the third verse.

What Child Is This?

This unusual 15th-century text highlights the dialogue between Mary and Joseph. Despite an overriding atmosphere of joy and love, there is a premonition of Calvary. A subtle sense of urgency is also apparent as the poet's dream unfolds. The organ accompaniment dances under the voices "with a laughing cheer."

This piece which features on Patrick's album Fair Albion uses the orchestra to convey a panoramic pastoral scene. It is particularly inspired by the undulating Wolds of Lincolnshire, the county in which Patrick was born and lived in until his early twenties, and also the peak district of Yorkshire and Derbyshire and the warmth of the people who live there. Parts available on hire from Hawes Music Ltd.

The Dead Soldier (for SATB choir and orchestra OR piano)  Duration: circa 4 minutes The Dead Soldier originally appeared as part of the third movement of The Great War Symphony written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.  It is important for choirs to be aware throughout of the independent, melodic accompaniment where much of the sorrow of this moving poem is centred.  Every effort should be made to convey the words clearly especially in the first verse where the syntax is quite complex.  Equally important, is that performers should identify with the deep pain felt at the loss of a loved one.

The Dead Soldier

Upper and lower voices are divided into two distinct choral worlds. The sopranos and altos narrate Wordsworth's majestic text, while tenors and basses take on the role of minstrels playing "their Christmas tune." The lower voices create the sense of a strummed guitar, with a sotto voce tone throughout while the much more prominent upper voices provide shape and contrast. An excellent display of storytelling!

Minstrels

A lilting melody is introduced against which the independent choral parts call for love to pervade all that we do. A defiant middle section proclaiming that "no fear be known to us" creates cohesion and contrast. The piano in this lovely work is a predominant part of the texture. In essence, the piano writing creates the feeling of a dance; singers must be aware of this throughout so that their rhythms reinforce and interact with those of the piano, creating an overall atmosphere of joy and contentment.

This simple version of The Lord's Prayer is taken from The Edenham Eucharist. Some unexpected key changes help to sustain the momentum, although the overriding approach is one of straightforward harmonies and rhythms. In the context of the Eucharist setting, this piece is marked at a slower tempo and has organ accompaniment. This version is short but lovely.

The Lord's Prayer

Written for the Artistic Director of the Lancaster Chorale (Ohio) on his retirement from the Chorale.  The piece is set for an unaccompanied SATB choir with an SATB quartet in a manner similar to the Allegri Miserere and uses the words from Psalm 91, commonly known as the Psalm of Protection.  As a religious song, this Psalm is invoked in times of hardship.

The call of Christ to "Come To Me" is represented by gentle vocal phrases and an overall sense of yearning.  There is an atmosphere of weightlessness and calm to reflect the sentiment that Christ's yoke is easy and his burden is light.Though this is a profound text from the New Testament, Patrick has deliberately approached it in an understated way.  Choirs, therefore, should not be tempted to perform in an over-expressive manner.  Rather, they should allow the phrasing and harmony to speak for itself, thereby creating a feeling of innocence and simple truth.

Come to Me

A setting of the well-known phrase from Psalm 46, "Be still, and know that I am God" for choir and piano. The piano's repeated chordal patterns flow gently throughout, and the long legato choral lines help the listener drift into a world of peace and beauty. The composer wrote this piece early one morning when all was still and shrouded in a thin mist. Beautiful!

Be Still

This medley features three well-known songs from World War I: Pack Up Your Troubles; Keep the Home Fires Burning and It's A Long Way to Tipperary. This gives a quick-slow-quick feeling to the arrangement which is through-composed and linked by transitional passages. The work ends with a section from Holst's "The Planets" - Mars and I Vow To Thee My Country. 8 minutes

A children's opera that reimagines the story of Robin Hood, exploring what happens when Robin is unable to save the day and the forest community must look to itself for solutions. There are four main groups of characters in this opera: Villagers, Soldiers, Masons, and Bagmen, and although these groups interact at times, it is possible to rehearse them individually. For example, a particular form or year group (or even a school) could be the Masons, another the Soldiers, and so on. The solo writing is more limited, but because of the strophic nature of many of the choruses, there is room for soloists other than the principals to sing isolated verses.

This piece originally appeared as part of the first movement of The Great War Symphony written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.  The chordal, prayerful style of the accompaniment makes this piece fit perfectly into acts of remembrance, funerals and any other occasion which calls for peace and reflection. Christian Soldiers

The profound opening words of Saint John's Gospel, used in The Word, reach back to the beginning of creation, and the music is therefore mystical and subdued  until the phrase "in him was life." From this point on, the feeling is one of bright optimism and confidence in the light of Christ. Perfect as an anthem at any time of the year but especially at Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve when this reading is proclaimed.

The Word

This carol can be used either within a Christmas service or as a stand-alone Christmas centerpiece. The text portrays a work of contrast and variety, conveying a full palette of colors- majestic and exhilarating fanfare-like sections and warm and expressive lyrical moments. The Kingship of Christ is shown in its many forms, both humble and mighty. Although intended primarily for Christmas, this piece will also work for the Feast of Christ the King.

Behold the King

A setting of the Eucharist for celebrant, congregation, organ and optional SATB choir. Written for the composer's church in Edenham, Lincolnshire in 1997, and originally only comprising the Gloria, Sanctus and Benedictus. This revised version includes the full Eucharist service.

The full impact of bereavement on the human soul is powerfully and uniquely conveyed.
