Originally commissioned by the Bard College Contemporary Jazz Composers Ensemble, this tune takes some of the tropes of Latin Jazz and, hopefully, warps them just a little with the occasional bar that just "doesn't have enough beats" and background figures that seem to wander around. Instead of a "Shout Chorus", HELIX has what I call a "Whisper Chorus" that still showcases the group' s ensemble playing, but is very quiet (still exciting, though! ) and mostly played without the rhythm section.
