Honeybuns

One of the best examples of early jazz/rock is the title track from Duke Pearson's 1965 album Honeybuns. The chart begins with an irresistible gospel/rock/swing riff in the horns and piano and is followed by an equally catchy melody played by trumpet, tenor saxophone and flute. Harmonically, the melody is based on an extended G blues, with the form lasting for 24 measures as opposed to the traditional 12. On the original recording the only solos are for trumpet and piano, with the saxophones playing the same introductory figure as a background. In this version solo changes are included in each part allowing solos to be added or opened up. This one is very soulful, cute and fun!
