Horkstow Grange is an English folk song from Lincolnshire. Grainger heard this song as he wandered the countryside recording various singers and then using the tunes for various musical arrangements. Grainger used this tune as the second movement of his famous Lincolnshire Posy, commissioned in 1937. Grainger tried to keep true to the tune sung to him in the original recording which explains the irregular meter changes of 4/4 and 5/4 throughout. This arrangement is close to the version heard in Lincolnshire Posy. The tune is heard in four variations using various orchestrations and including polytonality. The musicality needed for this arrangement is very high to extract nuances for the ensemble. It is a short but intense piece of music.
