you is a labor of love lost. it is a work deeply rooted in the tragedy, grief, confusion, pain, sorrow, healing, light, and joy of heartbreak. this piece directly addresses one of the most powerful tenets of heartbreak: that all of these things can be felt simultaneously. 

i began writing this piece with a swirl of poetry and musical fragments in my mind. i could hear old pieces i'd written, new ones i was working on, poems my best friend had made for me, and all of the beautiful texts that i'd always based my vision of love upon. love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. roses, beaches, smiles, Chicago the list feels endless even now. in composing this work, it was my goal to capture a few of the moments that i was experiencing in my own head and my own heart and express them in such a way that they might be experienced by others as well.

Written in dedication to the Missouri night sky and a dear friend, Heather Hamilton. Sara Teasdale's text is brought to life by experiences and inspirations found in her home town of St. Louis. Compositional emphasis on slow, reflective homophony and cloudy, clustered harmonies.

This setting is dedicated to the Olympia High School Mastersingers, conducted by Daniel Jackson. Sara Teasdale's poem is brought to life in a dynamic, moody setting, Perfect for ensembles of varying sizes, this piece has been performed by high school chamber ensembles and all-district choirs alike.

I am not yours

Representing a culmination of the composers undergraduate studies in music, this work seeks to explore Shakespeares beloved text with inspiration drawn from historians propositions that Shakespeare may have been a gay man. Though the composer has no interest in outing closeted historical figures, the possibility that one of those figures might embody a relatable life experience not often expressed publicly at that time is inspiration enough.

beati qui esuriunt is a reflection on hunger. hunger manifests itself in our lives every single day. hunger can be physical, emotional, or spiritual. one can hunger for grain the same way they hunger for love. hunger is felt by people in positions of power and privilege and by those who are marginalized, oppressed, and starved.

this work engages with socio-cultural power structures through the use of latin and the refraction of compositional styles popular in early church choral music. the relationship between spiritual fulfillment and literal sustenance will present itself differently to every person, much in the same way that hunger itself presents differently to every person.

on a more personal note, i began this work to reflect on my own experiences in eating disorder recovery. i had not felt hunger (a real, physical side-effect of some eating disorders) in years. as i wrote this work, my hunger began to return, and i have truly begun to learn how to fulfill myself.

"Go, Lovely Rose!" is a setting of one of Edmund Waller's most well-known, delicate, and "lovely" poems. Composed for the Olympia High School Mastersingers under the direction of Daniel Jackson, this was my first complete choral work. Perfect for intermediate and chamber ensembles, this piece makes a great, accessible addition to any concert program.
