(Choral SATB)
I Lift Up Mine Eyes (Psalm 121) is part of the section (Psalms 120-134) of psalms called the Songs of Ascents', meaning "to sing while going up." It is a song of thanksgiving sung by the psalm singer, possibly on the way to Jerusalem with the hills of Jerusalem in view. The psalm contains two voices a singer (v. 1-2) and a priest or respondent (v. 3-8). Psalm 121 thus provides words of assurance that if the faithful fix their eyes on the source of their "help," then the Lord, who "does not slumber," will indeed "guard, keep watch over, and protect."
This piece is built on duets between the sopranos and altos, and the tenors and basses, for many of the verses. They then come together to resolve the verses.
