I Wish I Could Give You Something was written as a token of appreciation
to The Giving Tree by the great Shel Silverstein. Shel Silverstein and his
poetry books were incredibly impactful on me growing up and are something
that I will always hold close to heart. Because of this I like to try my best
to implement Shel's style of poetry, writing, and illustrations on my style
of writing, that being that it is wacky, weird, discombobulated, and
fragmented. I Wish I Could Give You Something is a quote specifically from
The Giving Tree which in totality reads "I wish I could give you
something but I have nothing left". I love this quote because of how
perfectly it sums up the story of a parental figure who gives their child
everything they possible can, asking nothing in return. I tried my best to
portray the tone a emotions that I felt when I read this is as a child,
ending in a reflective manner representing the child in old age finally
coming to terms with his life and being contempt to just spend time sitting
on the tree stump.
