Flash Mob for wind ensemble

Flash Mob (2011) is inspired by the recent trend of large crowd performance art mobilized by social media. In a typical flash mob, participants organized through email, Facebook, or Twitter unsuspectingly converge on a public area and breakout into an unusual or entertaining activity. In 2006, nearly 4000 people silently danced in subway stations throughout London while wearing headphones connected to portable music devices. The first "international flash mob" on record took place in 2008 as thousands of participants in over 25 cities took part in the world's largest pillow fight. The surreal experiences generated by flash mobs challenge the traditional boundaries between artist and audience and increase social media's influence on art in the 21st century.

Song of the Telegraph for Wind Ensemble

When Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872) invented the electromagnetic telegraph system in the 1830s, he could not have anticipated how its technological advances might be reinterpreted artistically in the next century. Another inventive spirit, Charles Ephraim Burchfield (1893-1967), drew inspiration from both the system's physical appearance and the sounds emanating from miles of telegraph wires strung on wooden poles along country roads. A masterwork of synesthesia, Song of the Telegraph (1917-52) personifies Burchfield's highly receptive mind that could translate auditory stimuli into incredible visual representations.

Song of the Telegraph (2010) is in three continuous movements, each addressing a different aspect of Burchfield's painting. The first movement, Across the Wires, features a series of undulating textures pitted against an energetic tapping motive, not unlike the visual rhythm of Burchfield's humming telegraph wires. Song of the Clouds introduces long, legato phrases that weave together into a series of passing clouds, each gathering greater intensity until reaching a stormy climax. A piccolo solo introduces the final movement, Bluebird's Halo. Although a somewhat hidden feature of the painting, the diminutive bluebird perched on the fence encompassed by a golden halo strikes out against the surrounding darkness. The orchestration brightens, as a simple tune becomes the basis for revisiting the first movement's telegraph' motive.

Straphanger (2012) is inspired by Diego Rivera's 1931 mural-style painting Frozen Assets. The painting's three scenes of Great Depression life in New York City inform Straphanger's structure, timbre, and register. The first movement, Drudge, is derived from Rivera's depiction of the commuting middle class dwarfed by oppressive skyscrapers. Underclass references the middle of the painting, where the homeless, many of whom provided inexpensive labor to build the city, are warehoused in a steel and glass shed. The final movement, Robber Barons, is centered on the bottom third of the painting. Here, the wealthy preside over their fortunes in an underground bank vault. Hidden away from mainstream society, they appear indifferent to the inequality they perpetuate.

Profiteering (2006) is a work written in response to the American invasion of Iraq. 

Scored for two bass clarinets, the work delves into the complex emotions and consequences surrounding modern warfare. Through dissonant harmonies, contrasting textures, and intense dialogues, the piece captures the tension and moral implications of war, shedding light on the intertwining of economic interests and personal gain.
