Harald Sigurdsson, frequently referred to as Hardrada, was the King of Norway from 1046 to 1066, and has been dubbed "the last real Viking." He was a military prodigy, and lived a very violent life; his first taste of combat came in the year 1030, when he fought in the Battle of Stiklestad alongside his half-brother, Olaf, who had been living in exile. Upon returning home, the two men attempted to recapture Olaf's position on the Norwegian throne, but the battle tragically culminated in Olaf's death and Harald's exile. Harald fled to the Grand Prince of Kiev, Yaroslav the Wise, who had also been the benefactor of Olaf during his exile. After several years in Kiev, Harald had amassed an army, and together they travelled to the Byzantine Empire, where they joined the Varangian Guard. After fighting in battles from Constantinople to Jerusalem, Harald was imprisoned by the Byzantine Emperor. Only a revolt amongst the Varangians allowed Harald to escapehe and those who were loyal to him stole several ships from the Empire and sailed back to Scandinavia. Upon his return to Norway, Harald sought to retake the throne lost by his brother, but rather found Olaf's illegitimate son, Magnus the Good, to be the present King. The two agreed to rule Norway together, but nevertheless frequently fought one another, until Magnus died just a few years later. With his rightful place on the throne finally secure, Harald desired to expand his empire further. The new King invaded several neighboring countries, with little success. His most ambitious campaign, however, was his invasion of England. He and his army had initial success, forcing their way deeper into the country. Upon arriving in Yorkshire, Harald expected to meet with its citizens to negotiate, but was instead greeted by a fully armed militia. This surprising act of betrayal led to Harald and his army being crushingly defeated. It was during this conflictthe Battle of Stamford Bridgethat Harald was killed by an arrow shot to the throat.

The opening motive heard in Regal Thoughts came to me during a night of incredible boredom. In high school, my first job was working for my local Regal Cinemas movie theater. I would have to stand at a front podium in the lobby and mindlessly tear moviegoers' tickets in half; on week nights, the crowd was inevitably excruciatingly slow, and all I had to entertain myself was my thoughts. This tune spawned in my mind amidst the background noise of the popcorn burners, the thundering bass from the theaters, and the endlessly looping advertisements on the TVs. I turned it into a piece for orchestra before having taken any composition lessons in college and have since reworked it into the much more idiomatic piece it is today.

This piece is a brilliant and exciting fanfare perfect to open any British brass  band concert!

Born in the Netherlands in 1896, Geertruida Wijsmuller spent her life rescuing over 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi German oppression. She grew up with a family of compassionate working-class parents, and began working at a young age. After meeting her husband and deciding against having children, Wijsmuller took up a life of social work. In 1938, the infamous Kristallnacht  a night during which Germans nation-wide ransacked Jewish homes and businesses  led Geertruida to meet a Jewish boy who was lost in the woods, and to help him sneak across the border. After this experience, Wijsmuller began to use her status as a non-Jewish person and her brilliant wit to speak with Nazi soldiers and to convince them to allow Jewish children to leave the country by train. From then until the beginning of World War II, she organized trains called Kindertransports to bring hundreds of children from Germany to both the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. While the conditions in such situations were not desirable, they were far better than the environment the children would have been left in after the outbreak of the war. Tensions in Europe continued to rise, but Wijsmuller  fueled by compassion  kept negotiating with Nazis to maintain the Kindertransports for as long as possible. Even after the trains were forcibly shut down, Wijsmuller continued to provide children with food and medicine throughout the rest of the war. This piece is a programmatic telling of the most meaningful aspects of Wijsmuller's life during the war.

Woodwind Quintet

Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, written in 1869, is a thrilling science fiction adventure well ahead of its time. This piece's three movements represent three of the most exciting and important chapters in the novel. 

1. At Full Steam

The protagonists of the novel, on board a modern and well-equipped ship, have been seeking a mysterious sea monster that has caused terror all across the globe. In this chapter, they begin to do battle with it, and discover that they are heavily outmatched by this creature. Ultimately, they learn that they are not fighting a natural being, but a man-made vessel and a marvel of technology. Their ship is destroyed, and they are pulled under the sea into the submarine, the Nautilus. 

2. A Vanished Continent 

In this deeply reflective chapter, the main protagonist and his underwater captor don diving suits and venture out together at night into the ocean. They explore the ruins of clearly human-made stone structures and statues, which have been overtaken by marine life. This place is the lost city of Atlantis, and the two men contemplate about the remnants of this old civilization as the moon shines eerily over the sea.

3. Shortage of Air

This chapter represents one of the most intense and climactic moments in the novel. The Nautilus and its crew find themselves trapped beneath an iceberg, and the captives on board realize that they only have 48 hours of air remaining. All characters realize that unless they all cooperate, their deaths are iminent. They each take turns wearing diving suits and digging their way through the thick ice. With just a few feet of ice remaining, the captain of the submarine decides to attempt breaking through the ice using the force of the vessel itself. They smash through the barrier, and are saved as air rushes in. 

The title of this piece comes from a beautiful quote by Verne:

"The sea is everything. It covers seven-tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides. The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the Living Infinite."
