The second movement, Hypnotik, develops out of a simple D, with melodies and chant-like fragments slowly unfurling as if spiraling outward. These musical threads intertwine and multiply, gradually weaving a dense, hypnotic texture shaped by the colors of the octatonic scale. Polyphonic layers build, not in a rush, but with a slow, magnetic pull—drawing the listener into a sound world that is both meditative and entrancing.
Don Bryn’s Piano Sextet in D is a compelling new work for advanced or professional ensemble that combines formal clarity with harmonic adventure. Written in three movements for a total about 16 minutes, the sextet is composed for 2 violins, viola, 2 cellos, and piano. The sextet explores the expressive potential of the octatonic scale–an eight-note collection alternating whole and half steps–while ensuring that its melodies remain singable, its textures enchanting, and its structures firmly rooted in tradition. Using formal structures like sonata form and thorough development of thematic material ensures the sextet is not only structurally sound but also rich in narrative and continuity.
