Schubert composed his Ave Maria in 1825, originally for voice and piano. In 1885, the German violinist August Wilhelmj adapted it as a showpiece for violin and piano. In 2000, the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra commissioned me to orchestrate Wilhelmj's arrangement for solo violin, strings, and harp.

After revising it in 2024, this became version 1 of the arrangement. This version was written specifically for a concert that would use a small string ensemble of 11 players (6 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, and 1 double bass). I decided to treat it as a large chamber group of 11 soloists, although it can easily be played by a full string orchestra as well.

There are also two other versions which I did on my own initiative in 2021. The first (version 2) is scored for solo violin, string orchestra, harp, and organ (with alternative parts for 9 winds which can replace the organ if necessary). Version 3 omits the solo violin but uses the same ensemble as version 2.

"Prince Igor," Borodin's unfinished operatic masterpiece, tells the story of a semi-mythical prince in 12th-century Russia, defending his land against the invading Polovtsy tribe. The choral lament Ah, What Raging Storm makes use of a stirring melody and rich harmony, features typical of Borodin's style.

"In Silence Under Many a Star" begins with a passage of dissonant chords, played as softly as possible by the piano, evoking the image of the title. Melodic fragments gradually emerge from nothingness. Soon, violin and clarinet introduce a long, slow theme over a gentle ostinato in the piano; in the score, this is identified as a 'Danse Macabre,' to be played very slowly, gently and caressing. After an explosion of joyous energy, the 'Danse Macabre' returns, slowly drifting away into the night.

Version 3 of his orchestration omits the solo violin, moving the melody line into the first violins, sometimes supported by cellos or second violins. The harp and organ parts are the same as version 2 (as are the optional winds to replace the organ if necessary).

Ave Maria (version 3)

In 2025, two newly authenticated organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach were added to the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis as BWV numbers 1178 and 1179. Preserved in manuscripts copied by Salomon Günther John, a pupil of Bach in Arnstadt, these ciaccone likely date from the composer’s late teens, around 1703–1705.
	Both works explore the chaconne form—a repeating bass pattern supporting a sequence of variations—then popular in North and Central Germany. The Chaconne and Fugue in D minor (BWV 1178) is strikingly bold, with contrapuntal textures and harmonic daring that foreshadow Bach’s mature organ style. The Chaconne in G minor (BWV 1179) is more introspective, marked by a sustained lyricism that is less reliant on counterpoint.
	Together, they reveal a young Bach experimenting with inherited forms and already shaping a distinctive voice. Their rediscovery not only enriches our understanding of his early development but also offers performers and listeners fresh insight into the imaginative world of the teenage composer.

Originally for double bass and piano these four works were composed  by Gliere for his friend Serge Koussevitsky in the first decade of the 20th century and have become staples of the bass repertoire. These challenging showpieces are now available for violists.

This edition is closely based on Jessel's original version for theater orchestra from 1905. The score and parts have been thoroughly corrected and engraved. While Jessel's original orchestration has been preserved additional instrumentation (optional) has been added to make the piece playable by full symphony orchestra.

What Child Is This?

Although Weber is regarded as the father of German Romanticism in opera, "Der Freischutz" is his only opera that has more than a toehold in the active repertoire. Act III begins with two back-to-back arias featuring an obligato string instrument in the accompaniment (cello in the first, viola in the second). Here both arias have been arranged for soprano and piano, with viola obligato.
